Tea stories Earl Gray is the world's most famous and popular flavored tea. It owes its fine, fresh citrus taste to the aroma or oil of bergamot. Two different stories are told about its origins. An English diplomat is said to have saved the life of a Mandarin (a high-ranking official in the Chinese state administration) in China. Out of gratitude, the Chinese gave the Englishman the recipe for an aromatic tea - for the then Prime Minister Edward Earl of Gray (1830-1834). According to the second story, the English Prime Minister ordered a shipload of the finest Chinese tea around 1830. Fine bergamot oil was also on board. When the ship was caught in a storm, the barrels containing the bergamot oil broke and the earl's tea took on the aroma. The captain still delivered the apparently spoiled goods to the Prime Minister. The Earl tasted the tea, was thrilled and gave it his name: Earl Grey!
