The cobblestones of Dumbo are gridlocked, not with taxis, but with content. Under the towering arch of the Manhattan Bridge, a cast of fall's most fashion-forward have claimed the street for their own, each working a different angle while pigeons step politely around them. A yellow cab idles at the edge of the frame, unbothered. New York has seen it all before.
Victoria Tentler-Krylov created this cover for The New Yorker's Fall Style & Design issue, drawing on a sketch she'd carried around for nearly a year. In her own words: "The main idea is to poke gentle fun at the young teenage wannabe Instagram influencers who flock to specific 'Instagrammable' spaces in New York City: Dumbo, in this case. The whole image is, in a sense, a capsule of the Gen Z style in 2022." Her warm, layered illustration style renders every character as a specific type, every detail a small joke for those paying attention.
It's a perfect gift for the New Yorker subscriber, the devoted puzzle enthusiast, or anyone who knows exactly which block in Dumbo this is, and has probably been there for the same reason.
